Alternative / Alternative
Desert Liminal is an experimental pop trio bound by sterling trust in the Chicago underground scene that has cradled them all, providing a source of profound psychic exploration and purpose. KEXP called Desert Liminal's 2024 album Black Ocean "a collection of sweeping art-rock, cinematic shoegaze, and poetic dream-pop featuring a lush, enveloping sound."
Black Ocean's songwriting is appropriately stirring and intimate. Primary songwriter Sarah Jane Quillin wrote “Kid Detroit” for drummer Rob Logan, detailing with heartfelt nostalgia an early tour when the band was thrashed with a restless grief. “It's funny to miss the times when you were younger and a total wreck - but we had the band.” she says. This is exactly Desert Liminal’s strength, alchemizing bleak moments into a beautiful and distant landscape. Similarly, “Call Me Your Wasteland” is a loving ode to Quillin’s bandmate and vocal mentor Mallory Linehan whose shimmering harmonies and swirling, looping violin and guitar give Black Ocean exciting new depth.
Desert Liminal's 2021 vinyl debut on Whited Sepulchre Records sold out its pressing, and the band toured the US and Europe, performing with kindred artists like DEHD, Midwife, and Laraaji. Their follow up Black Ocean released on Whited Sepulchre in October 2024.
